  • Narrative Description of the Project:

The project commissioned by the Royal Court Affairs is to provide suitable access to the new Sultan Qaboos Mosque in Nizwa with a capacity for 10,000 worshippers. A traffic study was carried out and propsals made to provide robust access to the mosque from the existing road network. There is a good primary road network serving the vicinity of the mosque, namely, the Nizwa-Ibri Road and the Nizwa-Thumrayt-Salalah Road. There is a major wadi running near to the easter side of the mosque site which is taken into consideration. The culmination of the traffic study resulted in a concept accessibility scheme by new roads connected to the primary network and replacement of a sub-standard underpass across the Nizwa-Ibri Road with a proposed new overpass. This overpass will also serve Nizwa Hospital. The project is initially up to concept and preliminary stage with an option to take it to detailed design subject to instruction from the client. The project roads are all single carriage way access roads with culverts at selected locations and floodways at less important locations. The project is coordinated with Ministry of Housing, Ministry of Transport and Communications and Royal Oman Police.
